The Benefits of Studying Abroad

 The Benefits of Studying Abroad

By Essia Dziri

My name is Essia Dziri, and I’m an international student from France, originally from Tunisia. I’m currently completing a Master’s in International Management, and this semester I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad at Maryville College in Tennessee. I’ve always dreamed of experiencing student life in the U.S. and this exchange was everything I hoped for and more! I came here looking to challenge myself. While I discovered a different academic system, I ended up gaining so much more than I ever expected.

From the very beginning, this journey pushed me out of my comfort zone. The first few days were intense. Between settling in, meeting people, and adjusting to a whole new rhythm of life, I quickly realized how welcoming and close-knit the Maryville community is. The small campus, the kindness of professors who knew me by name, and the incredible diversity of students made me feel right at home. I’ve built strong friendships with people from all around the world.

Traveling while studying abroad is one of the best parts of the experience. It gives you the chance to explore, grow, and make unforgettable memories while still being a student.

I love the way the U.S. college system gives students so much freedom. I chose the classes I wanted across several subjects like organizational behavior, marketing, and international relations. Classes were also shorter and more interactive.

Campus life was also something completely new for me. In France, we go to university and then go home. There is a clear separation. In the U.S., and especially at Maryville, the campus feels like a second home. We live, eat, study, and hang out all in one place. The campus is huge, surrounded by nature, and full of life. Most students have cars, which was surprising for me, since we usually rely on public transportation in France.

Studying abroad is also about discovering who you are in a new environment. Learning how to be independent, adapting to new cultures, and gaining a broader worldview. This experience gave me confidence, new friendships, professional clarity, and memories I will carry with me forever.

If I had one piece of advice for any student: take the leap.

Go abroad. You will grow in ways you never imagined!
