Immediate Advice for International Students on F-1 & J-1 Visas (February 2025)

We hope this message finds you well. We understand that recent changes in immigration policies may be causing some uncertainty, and we want to ensure that you are equipped with the most up-to-date information. Below are important guidelines to help you maintain your legal status and stay informed about any immediate concerns related to your F-1 or J-1 visa.

1. Maintain Your Legal Status

  • Stay enrolled full-time – Please remember that maintaining full-time enrollment is crucial to keeping your visa status. Dropping below full-time without prior approval may result in loss of your visa status.
  • Do not overstay your visa: Be aware of your program end date and any grace periods for departure.
  • Keep your I-20 or DS-2019 updated – If you need an extension, apply early through the Center for Global Engagement

2. Carry Your Documents at All Times

  • Always have proof of your legal status when off campus. Carry:
✅ Your student ID
✅ A copy of your passport (keep the original in a safe place)
✅ A copy of your visa and I-94 (accessible at CBP I-94 Portal)
✅ A copy of your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1)

  • Do not carry your original passport daily, but know where it is in case of emergency.

3. Be Cautious with Travel Plans

  • Check for new travel restrictions before leaving the U.S. – Some countries may face increased scrutiny or additional entry requirements.
  • Carry proper documentation when re-entering the U.S. – You need:
✅ A valid passport (at least 6 months before expiration)
✅ A valid visa (ensure it has not expired)
✅ A recent travel-endorsed I-20 or DS-2019 (signed by your DSO within the last 6 months)

  • Prepare for longer airport screenings – Additional security checks may cause delays. Have proof of student status (transcripts, financial support documents, etc.).
TIP: Check your passport to make sure it doesn't expire in the next 6 months!

4. Be Mindful of Employment & Work Authorization

  • F-1 students: Work only as permitted (on-campus jobs or OPT/CPT with authorization). Unauthorized work can jeopardize your visa status.
  • J-1 students: Follow the rules for academic training and employment. Do not work on or off-campus without approval from your program sponsor.
  • If applying for OPT (Optional Practical Training) – Submit your application as early as possible. Processing delays may occur.

5. Be Cautious About Protests & Public Demonstrations

  • We advise caution regarding participation in public protests.
  • Recent policies may increase scrutiny on non-citizens participating in protests.
  • Do not get arrested – A legal issue could lead to visa revocation.
  • If questioned by law enforcement, politely decline to answer and ask to speak with an attorney.

6. Keep Your Contact Information Updated

  • Update your address and phone number with the Center for Global Engagement within 10 days of any change.
  • Monitor your email for important updates from your DSO, embassy, or USCIS. Talk with a DSO before responding to any emails from an Embassy or USCIS or ICE.

7. Seek Support & Legal Guidance

  •  If you have questions, schedule a meeting with your DSO or an immigration attorney.
  •  Use the Center for Global Engagement for guidance on legal and academic concerns.

We will continue to monitor changes and provide updates as necessary. Please stay in touch with us for any additional guidance or support.
