Tonight was very special for me. I went to see Slow Magic at Strand and he put on a brilliant performance. It’s a difficult thing to explain, what makes some shows really special and personal. This one tonight, though, definitely had ‘it’– whatever ‘it’ is. Selebrities opened, and they set the mood with some pleasant 80s-esque synth pop. From there, all that mattered was me vibe-ing out in the front row and Slow Magic deftly tweaking knobs, synchronizing samples, and battering his upright snare drum. He went through a few pairs of drum sticks over the course of the set, and I was lucky enough to catch one of the broken halves of a stick. I wish I’d had some cash on me to buy a shirt or tote or something, but I was in a bit of a hurry to get to the venue. Plus, I had never been to Strand before, so I wasn’t sure where I could find an ATM, but at least I came home with a nice souvenir!
The past two nights I’ve gone out to do something music-related, and it’s interesting to note the contrast between them. Friday night, I went to Slakthuset, a really cool club that is hidden amidst warehouses in an industrial part of the city. It’s probably the best nightclub I’ve been to in Stockholm, but it’s just that– a club; nameless DJs spinning nameless dance music. On the other hand, tonight I had the tremendous pleasure of engaging with a true musician sharing his art. It was glorious, emotional, and a hell of a lot of fun.
