Thanksgiving & Christmas Break - Reminder of Travel Responsibilities, Housing & More

 


TRAVEL DURING BREAKS

Your immigration status comes with some responsibilities. One of those is to prepare in advance of any international travel.  Here is what you need to know:

1. Get your I-20 or DS-2019 signed by International House staff

Prior to travel be sure to make an appointment to have your immigration document signed.  This indicates to any point of entry immigration official that you are maintaining your academic status and you are authorized to travel.  In order to receive travel authorization, you will need:
  • copy of passport (passport needs to be valid 6 months in advance)
  • current I-20/DS-2019
  • copy of unofficial transcript (showing past semesters and enrollment for a future semester)
  • proof that your entry visa is still valid * (expiry date after you plan to travel and under entries it says 'M')
*note: if your entry visa has expired, you will also need
You need to plan ahead and make an appointment.  

2. Make sure you travel with your passport and I-20 or DS-2019.

You will need these things for re-entry.  We recommend you also travel with a copy of your unofficial transcript (to prove you are enrolled if asked in the upcoming term)



RESIDENCE HALL BREAKS

Thanksgiving: Halls close Nov 21 @ 9pm and re-open Nov 26

Need to stay? 

Apply by Nov 15. on your Housing Portal - Fees apply and Meal Plans are not active during the break.

Maryville College residence halls close during the Thanksgiving Break and Winter break.  International students may request arrangements to stay during the November, Winter and Spring Break.  If approved, you will need to complete a break agreementThis is required even if you will stay 1 day or the whole break.  

Residence Life will communicate about breaks by email, at Res Hall meetings, and all forms are completed in the housing portal. If you miss their deadlines, they are not required to accommodate your request.  Learn More.  

Generally - international students are not required to pay a fee to stay during breaks, however you must follow their procedures.




MEALS DURING BREAKS

Meals are not provided on campus during breaks.

You can have groceries and other items delivered to your residence hall.  You will need to set up an online account at these stores.

You will need a debit or credit card.  Be sure to choose delivery.

NOTE ABOUT WORKING OVER BREAKS

  • If you are already approved to work on campus, you may work full-time during campus breaks. 
  • If you are not already approved to work - you need to plan in advance to apply for a position, get Social Security Authorization from the CGE and receive your SSN.  Talk to the CGE for details.
  • Curricular Practical Training for the fall semester ends on December 13th.  (or earlier if your CPT authorization on your I-20 has a different date).  Be sure to make an appointment with Ms. Sheppard if you hope to do future CPT for the spring semester.
