Staying in Status: Reminders for F-1 International Students

Studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa comes with exciting opportunities - and important responsibilities. To help you stay on track, here are some key reminders to help you maintain your F-1 immigration status while studying at Maryville College:

1. Keep Your I-20 Up to Date

Your I-20 is your most important document. Always make sure:

  • Your major(s) and minor (if applicable) are accurately listed.

  • Your program end date reflects your expected graduation.

  • You sign every new I-20 and keep all past versions for your records.

If you change your major, minor, or program length, you must report it within 10 days.

2. Maintain Full-Time Enrollment

You must be enrolled full-time during fall and spring semesters:

  • At least 12 credit hours

  • Dropping below full-time must be authorized in advance by your DSO (Designated School Official), usually for academic or medical reasons.

3. Get Authorization Before Working

You are not allowed to work off-campus without authorization.

  • On-campus jobs (like in dining services or the library): Allowed up to 20 hours/week during the semester.  Can be full time during the summer.  Any job must be approved by the Center for Global Engagement in advance.

  • CPT (Curricular Practical Training): Must be related to your major and approved in advance.

  • OPT (Optional Practical Training): Apply before or after graduation and plan ahead—it takes time to process!

4. Don’t Let Your Passport or I-20 Expire

  • Your passport must be valid at all times.  Plan ahead. It is usually possible to extend from inside the USA.

  • If you need more time to finish your degree, request a program extension before your I-20 expires.

5. Keep Your U.S. Address and Contact Info Updated

Any time you move, you must update your U.S. address within 10 days in SEVIS—often through your college portal or by notifying your DSO.

6. Travel Smart

Before leaving the U.S., make sure:

  • Your I-20 is signed for travel on page 2 (valid for 12 months).

  • Your visa is still valid for re-entry.

  • You carry all key documents: I-20, valid visa, passport, and any work authorizations.

7. Ask Questions Early

Not sure if something affects your immigration status? Ask your DSO first. It’s better to double-check than risk falling out of status.

Who is a DSO?  In spring 2025, Maddy Griffin or Kirsten Sheppard.
