First week in Greece

My first week in Greece has been the most amazing experience. From the moment we left Knoxville we’ve had so many wonderful, unique, educational, cultural, and different experiences.
When we first landed we were greeted by Dr. Guerinot’s mother who gave each of us a rose and a loving smile. We later in the week had the opportunity to attend a party at her family’s home where we had the opportunity to learn a few Greek dances, eat amazing food, and have the opportunity to converse with her family members about their lives in Greece and in return ours in America. It’s so interesting getting to learn about modern Greece and its culture of today as well as its history and culture of the past.

Our first archeological site we saw was the Acropolis which was breathtaking from the first site. We’ve also been to the Agora in the same day as well the Palace of Knossos during our visit to Crete. It’s amazing to think about the millions of people throughout millennia who have stood in the places of every site we have been at and the stories that have happened there. It’s surreal to imagine these ancient ruins in their original forms: ornately colored, securely structured, and used for religious and day to day purposes. There is so much history in these places and I feel blessed to be able to visit these beautifully rich sites.

In Crete we had the best meal thus far in the trip, not saying all the food has not been absolutely delicious, but this one was definitely number one. There were so many varieties of food from greens, various bean dishes, breads, to pork, rabbit, and the most interesting apple pie I’ve ever had. In our time in Crete, we also visited Museums where we learned about ancient Minoan societies and visited an Olive Oil farm where we took a cooking class and learned about the production of the Olive Oil.

I loved seeing the country side and the stunning mountain ranges around us and views of the most gorgeously striking blue water I have ever seen in my life as we traveled on the island. I am here to tell you that yes, the water is as blue as they say it is.

I’m looking forward to this next week in Greece and I can’t wait for the new experiences we’ll have!
